Swedish Culture
Clothing
The national swedish costume is worn on holidays and special occasions. The men's costume is embroidered waistcoats, breeches and felt hats. The women's costume consists of a flared skirt, a brightly colored apron, a waistcoat and bonnets. They are often embroidered with floral designs.
Sports
There is a large variety of sports in Sweden. Some include soccer, surfing, tennis, skating, golf, swimming, running, skiing, and hockey. Most Swedes receive about 4 weeks of paid vacation a year. They often travel to the countryside to enjoy various sports and other outdoor activities.
Homes
Most Swedes have small families and live in towns and cities. Their homes are well insulated to keep them warm in the winter. The houses are spacious and bright. Due to the many forests in Sweden, there are usually lots of wood products such as cabinets and floors.
Food
Sweden is famous for Smörgåsbord, a large buffet of meats, cheese omelets, fish, stuffed cabbage and sweets. Soups are a popular food in Sweden. Fish is a staple in Sweden because of the many rivers and lakes though it is very expensive due to pollution and over fishing. Herring is a common swedish fish. Other foods include cheese, potatoes, sausage and other root vegetables. Table manners are important to Swedes. They often use the phrase "tack for maten" which means thank you for the food.
