All About Sweden!

Introduction

Sweden has a complicated past, mixed with war and times of peace. It has a very interesting history, and this page will give you an overview of important events in its past.

The Early Ages

During the time period of 800-1050 AD, Sweden was not a country yet. They were part of the "Vikings" and this time period is known as the Viking Age. The early Swedish people worshiped Nordic gods such as Oden, Thor, and the afterlife of Valhalla.

Medieval Sweden

The medieval period in Sweden was very important. Things like Sweden's unification in 900, with Olof Skötkonung as their first king, were giant leaps in advancement for the Swedish people. In 1050 Sweden was intrduced to Christianity, which spread without troubles.

Great Power Period

The Great Power Period was a period in Swedish history in which Sweden was a great military power. This was the time of 1610-1718, and during this time Sweden's territory increased dramatically. But during 1718-1812, Sweden eventually lost more wars and acquired its present day borders in 1812. This was the last war that Sweden was ever engaged in, and in 1850 the breakthrough of industrialism marked the end of the Great Power Period.

Modern Sweden

Modern Sweden is the time period between 1900-present day. During this time Sweden managed to remain neutral in both world wars, and because of this became one of the wealthiest countries in the world in the post-war era. Then in 1995 Sweden joined the European Union, but rejected the euro in 2003. There have been challenges over the years, but Sweden managed to pull through.
